No More Fumes at Resit, Caldoro: “Reclamation is a Top Priority for Regione”

By the end of December, the works to implement safety measures at the Resit landfill located in Giugliano will start. Currently seized, for years industrial hazardous wastes coming from all over Italy have been illicitly disposed, as reported by some camorra pentiti (justice collaborators). Regional Commissioner for reclamation Mario De Biase made these statements when attending the starting operations to extinguish “fumes” of the plant together with President of the Regional Executive Board Caldoro and Regional Minister for the Environment Romano. Wastes have been burning now for five years and “fumes” will be treated with “injections” of carbon dioxide and later of clay in order to avoid further combustions.

The plan to implement safety measures at the plant is broader and envisages a treatment to avoid infiltration of poisons into ground water. Leachate pumping for special and hazardous wastes has already started.

Regione Campania’s priority is citizens’ health protection - President of the Regional Executive Board Stefano Caldoro stated. We must protect our environment and reclaim these areas; environment is at the top of the investments for Regione - Mr. Caldoro followed.

Regional Minister for the Environment of the Campania Executive Board Giovanni Romano reported :“Regione Campania will invest 39 million Euros to implement safety measures in the broad area around Giugliano where many landfills exist, such as Resit”.

In details, 6 million and a half will be allocated for Resit: its whole surface will be covered and a drain pipe system will prevent rain water to get to the fields. Moreover leachate will be withdrawn and treated. The landfill will be protected by a rich vegetation with perennial trees and will be equipped with a fire protection system.
