Regional Underground Railway System

The regional underground railway system that the Regional Administration for Transport of Campania is implementing sets forth the establishment of a big and complex system of rail networks (both urban and regional) to modernise or to build, connected to the National rail system, too, through several interchange junctions.

Currently, in Campania railway network is 1,205 kilometres long: 933 Km belong to the Ferrovie dello Stato (National Railway Network), of which 427 are of local interest and 506 of national interest, and approximately 272 are granted in concession or placed under Government management (70 Km are double-track lines). This is 8% of the total national amount (and corresponds to 3,572 Km). But the most remarkable figure concerns the number of passengers carried on almost 272 Km of railways granted in concession or placed under Government management, namely approximately 50 million passengers transit every year, that is around 1/3 of the total national amount (150 million passengers).

The aim of the project of the regional underground railway system is to make these already existing railway assets fruitful by modernising them and creating connections among them and with the new ones through interchange under a single major network, since the vast majority of them is not well connected or is in poor conditions. This integration principle also concerns timetables and fares (with single ticket services already being tested) in order to build one single regional transport system that is more and more efficient, modern and suitable for transport needs.
