The story: in 79 a.D. a burning cloud of gas and ash of 400° rolled on Vesuvius’ sides down to Ercolano. The few victims found in town, among whom a newborn in a cradle, reveal that the most part of the inhabitants had already left their homes, believing that the sea could be an escape. When the surge reached the beach the circa three hundred fugitives instantly died of thermal shock, after they had taken refuge in the boat shelters (fornici) opening on the beach. An upturned boat, 9-meter long, was found beside the victims.
