Sarno River, Dredging Re-started

Sarno River, Dredging Re-started

Activity for dredging of the Sarno river in its section between Scafati and Castellammare and concerning the processing of sediments of the Bottaro affluent have been re-started.

The intervention was funded by a five million € contribution. These resources join the 32 million € funding already set up by commissioner Flavio Cioffi for overcoming problems of the catchment basin of the Sarno river and will make it possible to complete dredging in the whole section of the river as well as the further processing of sediments removed that are approximately 350 thousand tonnes.

Activities had been stopped in the past due to the finding of fragments of asbestos cement among removed sediments that obliged Authorities to perform a different procedure to treat them, in agreement with the Ministry of Environment and the relevant Authorities.

Regional Minister for Public Works and Soil Conservation of Campania Edoardo Cosenza, as commissioner for hydrogeological instability of the Province of Salerno said: “This is a pivotal activity both from the environmental and the hydrological point of view, since it will increase the convoy capability of the river in order to limit its overflow in the Municipalities of Scafati, Torre Annunziata, Pompeii and Castellammare. This intervention is also very important for the implementation of the Major Project of the Sarno River”.
