Cape Palinuro, 95 newborn Caretta Carettas

On the Saline beach, at Cape Palinuro, the first 95 young Caretta Carettas (loggerhead sea turtles)of a turtle nest found a few days ago were born.

The animals were escorted to the sea by the monitoring group of the research project on the sea turtle promoted and financed by the Regional Ministry for the Environment of Regione Campania, under the scientific supervision of the zoological station Anton Dorhn and with the cooperation of the Pisciotta Centre for Environmental Education “La primula”.

This is not the first time that the Cilento Coasts become a place of nest-building for the Caretta Caretta. On the 21st of this past August, again in the Le Saline area, in Discesa di Ulisse, another 129 eggs were laid and gave birth to 111 turtles.

“The presence of researchers and volunteers – says the Regional Minister for the Environment Giovanni Romano – has been fundamental; thanks to the availability of the nearby hotel’s staff, they avoided that the young turtles were disoriented by lights and bystanders”.

“It is an event to celebrate – he continues – because it is a boost to the environmental policies undertaken by the Regional Government, and, most of all, a sign of the numerous actions we are carrying on for the conservation of sea and biodiversity”.

“Watching new turtles being born on our coasts is an intense emotion. It is good to know – he concludes – that many citizens attended the event, in the presence of the Coast Guard and of the authorities of the municipality of Cercola. The operations will continue for the next 48 hours in the hope that other young turtles will come to light”.
