Land Protection, Go-Ahead to River and Lake Agreements

Land Protection, Go-Ahead to River and Lake Agreements

The Regional Executive Board of Campania joined the National Charter of River agreements for the environmental upgrading of hydrographical basins. This is a negotiated planning tool that takes into consideration all the landscape and environmental aspects, as provided by the national adoption law of the European Landscape Convention, that establishes the undersigning of an agreement that allows to adopt a rule system where criteria of public services, economic performance, social values, and environmental sustainability act with a priority in search for effective solutions for the upgrading of river basins.

Land elements play a pivotal role through their combination (as environmental matrices), as well as political and institutional elements (namely the combination of policies implemented by several stakeholders), and Authorities and Organisations (Municipalities, Provinces, Regions, Associations, Businesses, citizens).

Regional Minister of the Environment of Regione Campania, Giovanni Romano stated: “This is a remarkable step forward in the environmental protection through a new strategy that starts from the involvement of all the stakeholders that are responsible for the environment and citizens’ protection from the institutional point of view”.

Regional Minister Romano concluded: “A participation tool that will lead to the upgrading of hydrographical basins through a process of wide participation of all concerned parties. Thus, Campania shared principles and contents of the National Charter of River Agreements and is committed to spreading it in the region through some specific promotion and awareness raising activities that will involve all local authorities, sector-related associations and all the other regional stakeholders in order to implement the use of river and lake agreements”.
