Waste, Production Drop Consistent with National Average

In accordance with the data spread by Istat, Campania is consistent with the National average as for waste production. The reduction in our region, in accordance with what already published by the High Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) last July, is approximately at 5%.

The daily average urban waste production in 2012 was 2 million 550 thousand tonnes with a reduction by over 200 thousand tonnes compared with 2010.

In details, concerning the unsorted waste, its production is currently 1 million 350 thousand tonnes per year compared with the previous year one million and a half tonnes and with a reduction of unsorted waste by approximately 150 thousand. This reduction results also from the simultaneous increase of the sorted share that will reach this year 50%.

Regional Minister of the Environment of Regione Campania Giovanni Romano stated: "If, to date, the smallest centres drove provinces, it is now a pleasure to see that provincial capitals, such as Benevento that reached 65% of separate collection, are achieving the targets set too. Last year’s figures are very encouraging: it is estimated that the provinces of Avellino, Benevento and Salerno exceeded 65%. The province of Caserta is about to reach 50%, while unfortunately the province of Naples is still under 40%, due to the negative effect of the Municipality of Naples that, on its own, produces half of waste of the whole province and is still stuck at 20%”.

Giovanni Romano added: “Reduction in waste production will be enhanced by the actions under the Regional Plan for Waste Reduction recently approved by the Partnership Taskforce. Through the investment of 30 million € for Municipalities and Authorities that will implement the actions of the Plan, we will reach, when fully operational, a further reduction by 250,000 tonnes. This is another reason for the examination and the new draft of the Urban Waste Regional Plan, approximately three years after its endorsement”.
